Youth Sundays
The Community Youth Program Family Sundays in the Park will start up again this year to be held every Sunday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. at Fairview Park, beginning May 2.
The events are sponsored by various community people and businesses in the area. The first event will have race cars presented by Leo Kenon and Jaime "the Kid" Lucas, Steve Lucas and Joel; a horse show; karaoke; horseback rides; spelling bee and math quiz for kids ages 6 to 12; Hoola Hoop contests; jump rope contests; pig pickin'; refreshments; games; prizes; and more. The entire event is free.
Everyone involved in organizing the event is a volunteer, and all food and prizes are provided by donations.
Anyone wishing to help with donations of prizes or food or is interested in volunteering for future Sundays, should call Donnell Winn at 919-583-1208.
The kitchen is open
An open house is planned Sunday at the new Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro at Temple Oheb Shalom at 112 W. Oak St.
The new location is the successor to the soup kitchen that operated for years at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Members of the temple, which is no longer used for regular worship, made the building's rear fellowship hall available for the kitchen, where needy people are fed daily lunches. Members of St. Stephen's raised money to have the fellowship hall reconditioned to make it suitable for the purpose.
The manager of the kitchen is Doricia Benton. She said the open house will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
The kitchen is operated through donations from churches and other organizations.
Spay and neuter clinic
The Wayne County Humane Society will have its spay and neuter clinic on Saturday.
The clinic will be from 10 a.m. until noon at the Wayne County Public Library. The clinic requires an application process, to offer financial help to low- and fixed-income families. To apply, people need to bring proof of income.
Sailing away
The Goldsboro Sail and Power Squadron will have a recreational boating outing Saturday at New Bern.
Members will meet at Wilber's Barbecue at 8 a.m. for breakfast and the convoy will then travel to New Bern for a "family day."
Free habitat seed
Quail Point Chapter of Quail Unlimited will distribute wildlife habitat seed to chapter members Saturday at Builders' Discount Center beginning at 8 a.m.
Sudan grass, lespedeza, sunflower and switchgrass seed will be available.
Property owners are encouraged to plant the grasses to enhance habitat for bobwhite quail and other small game, as well as songbirds.
Pick a pickle clue
A jar of Mt. Olive pickles has been hidden in Mount Olive. This is the last week clues will be printed that will lead someone to the location of the pickles.
The pickles will be labeled, "You are a winner in the N.C. Pickle Festival Treasure Hunt." The winner should bring the winning jar to the Mount Olive Area Chamber of Commerce. The winner will receive a pickle pack donated by the Mt. Olive Pickle Co. The clues:
*If you are feeling burned out, come and watch the bike stunts at the 2004 NCPF.
*If you ride the mechanical bull or the carnival rides at the festival, you'd better hold onto your hat or purse or you might lose them.
*Enjoy the food, craft and commercial vendors as they display their wares.
