Siding burns

A fire on Monday caused an estimated $1,000 in damages to vinyl siding at Italian Pizzeria at 503 N. William St., Goldsboro police and fire officials said.

Goldsboro firefighters answered the 5:35 p.m. call with three engines, a ladder and a command car. Once officials determined that the fire was suspicious, police were asked to investigate it further.

The fire was contained to the south side of the building near a door to the parking lot, police said.

School theft

The theft of property from Wayne Country Day School between June 30 and Aug. 14 was solved Monday with the arrest of a Wayne County man, police said.

David Edward Smith, 45, of J.W. Road, Pikeville, was charged by Goldsboro police with one count of misdemeanor larceny and five counts of felony obtaining property by false pretense. Smith was accused of pawning the stolen items, Investigator Dale Foster said.

Smith was arrested by Cpl. Jason Graham in the 3100 block of Cashwell Drive. Smith was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $16,000 secured bond.

Man robbed

A man was robbed Monday night of $4 as he walked on Durham Lake Road, a Wayne County Sheriff's Office report said.

David C. Jarman of Dudley told deputies that four men jumped him at 8:49 p.m. as he walked home from a store. He could not describe the robbers, who fled in a car.

Thefts

Property, valued at $3,340, has been stolen, according to reports filed with the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. The thefts include:

*Video-game equipment, about $50, two DVDs, jewelry and a jewelry box were stolen Monday after a door was damaged at a home in the 100 block of Swingletree Drive near Dudley. The resident, C.L. Garner, estimated the value of the property at $700.

*Video-game equipment and $50 in rolled coins were stolen Monday from a home in the 3200 block of Arrington Bridge Road near Dudley. The thief had entered through a damaged door and then left through a damaged window. The resident, Ronald Allan VanDyke, estimated the property's value at $200.

*A 22-cubic-foot GE refrigerator was stolen from a mobile home at Steve Jones Homes at 4407 U.S. 70 E., deputies said. The thief had inflicted about $900 in damages to a door and a wall. The refrigerator was worth $1,200.

*Thirty-one sheets of plywood, 60 bundles of shingles, a box of nails and five rolls of felt paper were stolen from Royster Clark at 141 Luby Smith Road. The property was valued at $1,190.

Car stolen

A dark green, four-door 1994 Dodge Intrepid was stolen Monday from the parking lot at the Economy Inn at 802 W. Grantham St., a Goldsboro police report said.

The owner, Leanna M. Hill of Goldsboro, told police that she had parked the unlocked car at about 5:45 a.m. and left a key on the sun visor. When she returned at 5 p.m., she said, she saw someone driving the car away. The car was valued at $3,000.

Assault charge

A 52-year-old woman from Fremont was arrested Saturday by Fremont police and charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Appie O'Neal Chatman of South Chestnut Street was accused of assaulting a man in her home, police Chief Ben Reid said. The man who was not identified was treated, admitted and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Ms. Chatman was placed in the Wayne County Jail without bond.

Missing

A 48-year-old man was reported missing Monday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Frances Ernest Beyer of 137 Mint Hill Drive was described as white, 5-feet-8 and 165 pounds with a small build, black hair, brown eyes, a beard and a tattoo on his right arm.

Beyer has not been seen since 6 p.m. April 7. No clothing description was available. Anyone with information on his location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
