Base named Tree City
Seymour Johnson Air Force Base has been named a Tree City USA by The National Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to its community forest. It is the fifth year the base has received this national recognition.
The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
"The trees in Seymour Johnson Air Force Base help clean the air, conserve soil and water and reduce heating and cooling costs by moderating temperatures," said John Rosenow, president of the foundation. "Tree City USA honors the countless men, women and children at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base who are working hard to ensure a greener, healthier tomorrow for us all."
Belk lecture
Henry Wiencek, author and historian, will speak Tuesday at the annual Henry Belk Lecture.
The public is invited to the event, which is sponsored by Goldsboro Rotary Club with the public library.
Wiencek is the author of "An Imperfect God -- George Washington, His Slaves, and the Creation of America," which has been nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. He has also appeared on several national TV news shows and has written several books and articles on history.
The lecture will begin at 1 p.m. at the Goldsboro Country Club. Tickets are $5. The price includes lunch. For tickets, call the library at 735-1824, extension 108.
MOC kicks off campaign
Mount Olive College will unveil plans Wednesday that will include a new 45,000-square-foot academic building, a wellness center and a communications center.
The college will start its "New Century Campaign: Building a Better Future for Our Most Valuable Resource" and unveil the plan at 7 p.m. in the Lois K. Murphy Regional Center. Gov. Jim Hunt, whose father was on the college's board, will be the guest of honor.
College officials say they have raised about 85 percent of the $23 million goal for the project.
Bloodmobile
The Wayne County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have a Bloodmobile today from 1 to 5:30 p.m. at Providence United Methodist Church. Donors will receive a coupon for a free car wash.
