Miss America coming

Miss America 2004 Ericka Dunlap is coming to Wayne County.

Ms. Dunlap will visit Brogden Middle School on Monday to speak to nearly 600 students on the importance of academic achievement. She will speak to one group of students at 9 a.m. and a second group at 10 a.m.

Miss America is on a national speaking tour promoting her platform, "United We Stand, Divided We Fall Behind: Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion."

Holiday schedules

Government offices in Wayne County will be closed on Friday.

All trash collections scheduled for Friday for the city of Goldsboro will be collected on Wednesday.

The Goldsboro-Wayne Transportation Authority will be operating on a holiday schedule on Good Friday. The bus service will operate from 9:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., and the van service will be operating on its normal schedule. Passengers requesting van service must call and schedule transportation the previous day, no later than 2:30 p.m. The phone number is 736-1374.

Schools will also be closed Friday for the beginning of spring break, which ends Monday, April 19.

Meth awareness class

An expert in methamphetamine from the State Bureau of Investigation will hold a training session May 6 for law enforcement, court and fire and rescue personnel, school counselors and others.

Special Agent Duane Deaver of the SBI Clandestine Laboratory Response Unit will speak from 9 a.m. to noon at the Wayne Center at 208 W. Chestnut St. in Goldsboro.

He will tell of the warning signs of a possible clandestine meth lab so that others can protect themselves during a visit to the home.
