Teacher scholarship applications available

Wayne County teacher scholarship applications are available for anyone interested in pursuing a teaching career in the Wayne County public schools.
The deadline to apply is April 23.
The program, sponsored by the county Board of Commissioners, was established in 2000 as a way to encourage Wayne County residents to become teachers and work in the county schools. Eight people received financial assistance from the county last year. Eight more will be selected in May.
"The Wayne County Teacher Scholarship continues to be an important part of our teacher recruitment efforts," said Olivia Pierce, schools executive director of community relations and instructional media technology. "This important initiative of the county commissioners continues to be a model for other school districts across North Carolina. We currently have three scholarship recipients teaching in our school system."
Four of the eight scholarships of $800 each are reserved for people enrolled in the college transfer program at Wayne Community College. When these students transfer to four-year colleges or universities, the scholarships will be converted to $5,000 awards for the recipients' junior and senior years.
Three annual scholarships of $5,000 each will go to students enrolled at state four-year colleges. One scholarship, valued at $8,000 annually, will be awarded to a student enrolled at a private college.
Applicants must be Wayne County residents. They must be accepted or enrolled in a four-year undergraduate program in education or in the two-year college transfer program at Wayne Community College. In addition to an application, individuals must submit their high school transcripts and verification of SAT or ACT scores for the $5,000 and $8,000 scholarships.
Wayne Community College applicants may include placement test scores as administered by Wayne Community in lieu of SAT and ACT scores.
Applications must be returned to the school administrative offices on Royall Avenue. Forms can be picked up at Southern Wayne, Eastern Wayne, Goldsboro, Rosewood, Charles B. Aycock, and Spring Creek high schools and at private schools in the county. Applications can also be picked up at the school administrative offices, Wayne Community College, and at the Family Support Center on Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
