School sued
A special education student who was injured in 2001 at Greenwood Middle School and her parents are suing the Wayne County Board of Education and five school employees.
The student, Brittney Leid, and her parents, Tonita B. Mayo and Ian Leid, are asking for more than $10,000 in compensatory and punitive damages. The parents now live in New York. The child also is represented by her guardian ad litem, D. Lynn Whitted, a Goldsboro lawyer.
The other defendants are Charles Vanhoy, the school principal; Ken Hemingway and David Hill, physical education teachers; Debra Warren, the assigned one-on-one aide for the student, and Lorie Williams, a special education teacher.
The suit, filed in the Wayne County Clerk of Courts Office, contends that the child, then 10, was assigned to a class taught by Hemingway and Hill. The plaintiffs allege that the child was allowed to go outside, where she suffered "severe and permanent injuries as a result of a fall, face forward, without adult supervision."
The plaintiffs also contend that the defendants did not seek medical help for the girl but instead called her grandmother to pick her up.
The plaintiffs' lawyer, Natarlin R. Best of Rocky Mount, also is seeking an award for medical expenses paid by the parents. The defendants' lawyer, Kenneth Soo of Raleigh, has not answered the suit.
Bogus goods found
Counterfeit compact discs, DVDs and name-brand clothing were recovered Tuesday by the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team of the Wayne County Sheriff's Office during a traffic stop in Dudley.
The property had a street value of $100,000, officers said.
Charges of a copyright violation against the two unidentified people in the car are pending until an investigation by the Sheriff's Office and the N.C. Secretary of State's Office is completed. The two people had moved to Wayne County from New Jersey.
Man robbed
A 41-year-old man from Dudley was robbed Tuesday night of about $100 by an armed man in the Wayne Memorial Hospital parking lot, a Goldsboro police report said.
Lorenzo Hines III told police that he was walking to his car at about 11 p.m. and a white car pulled up beside him. The driver got out, displayed a handgun, demanded Hines' money, grabbed it, got back in the car and drove away.
The gunman was described as black, 6-feet-2 and 210 pounds with long black hair in braids and brown eyes. He wore a white shirt, blue jeans and tan boots. Two other black men were inside the car.
Reward offered
A reward is being offered for the return of a construction trailer stolen from the Providence Church parsonage on Providence Church Road sometime after 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Tim "Bo" Holloman of Holloman Construction said there are about $15,000 worth of tools in the trailer. The trailer has large Fred Flintstone cartoon figures on each side.

School bus hit
A car rear-ended a Wayne County school bus Monday, but neither driver nor any of the 19 students were injured, the Highway Patrol said.
The driver of the car, Erasmao Santibanez Jaimez, 36, of Magnolia, was charged with failure to reduce speed.
The southbound school bus, driven by Sheila Anne Gardner, 37, of West Hill Street, had stopped at about 3:25 p.m. on Beston Road near New Hope Road to drop off passengers.
Damage was estimated at $1,500 to the car and $100 to the bus.
In other collisions:
*Damages were estimated at $12,000 at 5:26 p.m. Monday at U.S. 13 and True Vine Road, the Highway Patrol said. James Carroll Marlowe, 36, of Striding Ridge Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end collision. The other driver was identified as Samuel James Townsend III, 34, of Kinston.
*A minivan was demolished at 10:05 a.m. Friday on Claridge Nursery Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Thomas Carlton Elks Jr., 51, of Greenville, was charged with exceeding a safe speed. Troopers said the vehicle was pulling a trailer and it ran off the road. The trailer came offand the minivan overturned into a swamp. The vehicle was valued at $17,000.
Drug charges
Three Goldsboro residents were arrested today by Goldsboro police and charged with felony drug offenses.
*Roderick Demetrius Blount, 35, of Olivia Lane and Dexter Jermel Middleton, 22, of South Taylor Street were charged with two counts of possession with intent to sell illegal drugs and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $35,000 secured bond.
*Devaris Middleton, 29, of South Taylor Street was charged with possession of cocaine and marijuana. His bond was $1,000 secured.
Investigations
Wayne County law-enforcement officers are investigating these reports:
*Carpet in two bedrooms was stolen and a window and a storage room door were damaged at a home in the 200 block of Kornegay Drive in Dudley, sheriff's deputies said. The owner, Albert Ronnie Brown of Rose Hill, estimated the value of the carpet at $2,500.
*A combination radio and compact disc player was stolen Tuesday after a sport utility vehicle window was smashed and the dashboard damaged, Goldsboro police said. The SUV was parked in the 4100 block of U.S. 70 East. The owner, Erica B. Peterson of Vass, put a $350 value on her property.
Two teens sought
Two white teen-aged boys in a red, mid-sized sport utility vehicle are wanted by the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for questioning about Saturday's assault of a woman on Lancaster Road near Forehand Road.
Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said a passenger in the SUV threw a half-full drink bottle and struck the woman at her mailbox. The SUV also was described as having a luggage rack and beige and black stripes.

Brothers charged
Two brothers from Mount Olive were arrested Tuesday by Mount Olive police and charged with felony offenses.
Mark Anthony Elliott, 23, and Ryan Levon Elliott, 21, both of South Johnson Street, were charged with possession of a "weapon of mass destruction," a sawed-off shotgun. Mark Elliott also was charged with possession of cocaine.
Mark Elliott's bond was $6,000. Ryan Elliott's was $4,000.
Missing
A 15-year-old Spring Creek High School student was reported missing Tuesday by relatives to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office. Tylanda Nicole Wooten of 114 Lamar Drive was described as black, 5-feet-6 and 210 pounds with straight black hair, brown eyes and a heavy build.
When Ms. Wooten was seen last at about 11 a.m. Tuesday, she was wearing a black and pink shirt, a blue-jean dress and pink and black shoes. Anyone with information on her location was asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
