Road to be closed

Stony Hill Road will be closed for two weeks starting Monday because of the construction of a bridge for the new U.S. 117.

The construction will affect the portion of the road between the existing U.S. 117 and Salem Church Road at Belfast.

The closing will end Friday, March 26, weather permitting. There will be a detour route marked, taking drivers onto Belfast Road.

State transportation officials say the closing is necessary to protect the safety of drivers and construction workers. Work will include setting steel girders.

Letter to the president

U.S. Reps. Walter B. Jones and Virgil Goode sent a letter Wednesday to President George W. Bush requesting that he redirect $3 billion in his budget request to improve health care for veterans.

Jones' district includes portions of Wayne County.

"We fully support your commitment to the troops serving in defense of democracy; however, at this critical time, we hope you can support curtailing some of our financial commitments overseas," the letter reads. "You have made an admirable pledge to our nation's military, but you must appreciate that the soldier of today is the veteran of tomorrow.

"The veterans must be at the top of our list of priorities. Veterans should not receive any less than full funding of their health care system. We must take care of our veterans before we assist foreign countries. By increasing the budget for veterans benefits and services, veterans' medical care can be properly funded, as it should be."
