Missing
Shandy
The Wayne County Sheriff's Office is seeking information on a 49-year-old Goldsboro man who has not been seen since 3 a.m. Saturday when he was swimming across Sand Quarry Pond off Stevens Mill Road.
David Elmo Shandy, who lives at the Wayne Motel on West Grantham Street, was described as white, 5-feet-9 and 140 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. His older-model, brown Buick Century, with license number RRR-6750, was found at the motel.
Witnesses said Shandy swam about halfway across the pond when he disappeared. The sheriff's dive team and search dogs were summoned but could not find him, and the search was called off because of darkness.
Anyone with information on his location was asked to call Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Tony Morris at 731-1484.
Hog farm break-in
Two teen-agers were arrested today by Wayne County sheriff's officers and charged with two felony offenses after a break-in at a hog farm.
Josh Scott Lane, 18, of Skitt Drive and Kenneth Blain Ward Jr., 19, of New Hope Road were charged with breaking and entering and larceny. Each was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,500 secured bond.
The two were accused of breaking into a farm Feb. 19 and stealing an undetermined amount of property, Detective Sgt. Tony Morris said. Some items have been recovered and returned to the owner.
Jewelry stolen
About $3,740 worth of jewelry, including a 1.5-carat diamond ring valued at $2,000, was stolen Monday from a mobile home in the 100 block of Swingletree Lane near Dudley, a Wayne County sheriff's report said.
Other stolen jewelry included nine rings, two necklaces, a watch and three pairs of earrings. The resident, B.J. Swinson, also reported the theft of a DVD player, credit cards and other personal papers with a combined value of more than $100. The thief had damaged a door to get inside, deputies said.
Deputies also are investigating these reports:
*A cutting torch, a grinder and two pipe wrenches were stolen at a construction site at Old Smithfield and Hollowell roads. The property, owned by R&R Coatings Inc. of Robbinsville, was valued at $340.
*A Eureka resident who had reported the theft of $231 worth of entertainment equipment on Feb. 26 from his home now has said some checks also were stolen. Jesse Atkins Sauls Jr. of South Church Street said Monday that the check had been passed at his bank.
Cash, laptop taken
About $200 and a laptop computer were stolen from CitiFinancial at 2419 E. Ash St., according to a Goldsboro police report. The thief had smashed a door glass to get inside, then pried open a safe and two drawers to get the cash and swiped the computer from a desk. The computer was valued at $200, and damage was estimated at $700.
Mom, daughter collide
A mother and daughter were injured at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, when their vehicles collided at N.C. 581 and Rosewood Road, the Highway Patrol said. Neither was sure what had happened, the report said.
Kimberly Cox Muntz, 44, and Kortne Mariele Muntz, 17, both of Pate Circle, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital.
Kimberly Muntz was traveling north on N.C. 581, and Kortne Muntz was headed east on Rosewood Road. The investigating trooper, R.S. Powell, said both drivers "were vague as to what occurred, were unable to explain what had happened or which one had the right of way." The intersection is governed by a stoplight. Damages were put at $11,000.
Nine hurt in wrecks
Nine people were injured and damages were estimated at $59,000 in nine recent traffic collisions in Wayne County, officers reported.
*A driver from Goldsboro was injured at 9:25 a.m. Monday at East Ash Street and North Jefferson Avenue, Goldsboro police said. David Allen Chestnutt, 65, of South Taylor Street was treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. He also was charged with a safe-movement violation. Virginia P. Worrell, 75, of West Grantham Street was the other driver. Damages were set at $3,000.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 at 2:05 p.m. Monday on Patetown Road near Country Day Road, police said. Linwood Earl Smith, 44, of North Beston Road, LaGrange, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end crash. The other driver was identified as Mildred Jordan, 80, of Vance Drive.
*Two people were injured and damages were estimated at $6,500 at 3:27 p.m. Saturday at U.S. 70 and Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Maisy A. Wooten, 46, or Corral Drive, and her passenger, Sharrie Artis, 24, of Dollard Town Road, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. John Curtis Hill, 18, of Cherry Point, was charged with a yield violation.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 at 6:09 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 117 near Hill Street, the Highway Patrol said. Chrishaundor Lakiesh Evans, 25, of South Street, Fremont, was charged with failure to reduce after her car collided with a pickup driven by Jesse Lamont Crocker, 49, of U.S. 117 North.
*A driver was ejected from his motorcycle and the bike was demolished in a wreck at 10 p.m. Saturday on Braswell Road near N.C. 581, the Highway Patrol said. Timothy Shawn Minyard, 28, of Church of God Road was released after emergency-room treatment. He also was charged with driving left of center and no motorcycle endorsement. The motorcycle was valued at $7,000.
*A passenger was injured and damages were estimated at $6,000 at 6:18 p.m. Friday on N.C. 111 at a driveway to Walker Memorial Church near Broadhurst Road, the Highway Patrol said. Mary Cottle, 46, of Beulaville was released after emergency-room treatment. Troopers said her driver, Bobby Dean Cottle, 47, of Beulaville, was turning into the church driveway as another driver, Kevin Gerard King, 35, of Bolling Drive, started to pass. King was charged with a safe-movement violation.
*Three people were injured and damages were set at $17,500 in a three-vehicle crash at 8:50 a.m. Friday at U.S. 70 and Beston Road, the Highway Patrol said. Rubi Lopez Garnica, 29, and her passengers, Judith Garnica, 11, and Edgar Garnica, 8, all of Orchestra Lane, were released after emergency-room treatment. Ina M. Kneeshaw, 42, of North Beston Road, LaGrange, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Ms. Kneeshaw's southbound sport utility vehicle collided with Ms. Garnica's eastbound SUV and pushed it into another eastbound car driven by Jeffrey Lynn Radford, 46, of Toler Street, Princeton, the patrol said.
*Damages were estimated at $5,000 at 5:28 p.m. Wednesday at Indian Springs and Emmaus Church roads, the Highway Patrol said. Rebecca Louise Ervin, 19, of Robinson Drive, was charged with failure to reduce speed after the rear-end wreck. Marcos Ponce Herrera, 24, of Hopewell Lane, Mount Olive, was charged with no operator's license.
*A driver was injured at 8:23 a.m. Wednesday at Emmaus Church and Casey Mill roads, the Highway Patrol said. Christy Eleanor Lewis, 28, of Casey Mill Road, Dudley, was released after emergency-room treatment. Jimmy Estrada Jr., 21, of Oak Tree Drive, Pikeville, was charged with failure to reduce speed as a result of the rear-end wreck. Damages were fixed at $4,000.
Steak theft
FREMONT -- A 44-year-old Wayne County man surrendered Saturday to Fremont police after he allegedly stole $18.56 worth of ribeye steaks from a grocery store.
Employees at Joyner's Great Valu store at 200 S. Goldsboro St. detained Kenneth Lee Mooring of Old Black Creek Road, Fremont, until Chief Ben Reid arrived, according to the report. Mooring was charged with misdemeanor larceny. He was released from custody on a $400 unsecured bond.
Drug charges
A 32-year-old Goldsboro woman was arrested Monday by Goldsboro police on Hugh Street and charged with drug offenses. Sandra Renee Christine Hines of Creech Street was charged with felony possession of cocaine and misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia. She was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $2,000 secured bond.
