The Torhunta District of the Boy Scouts of America sponsored its annual Pinewood Derby on Feb. 21 in the Wayne County Moose Lodge off of 117 North in Goldsboro.
Chase Summerlin of Pack 59 in Grantham took first place in the race.
Second place was taken by Justin Martin of Pack 59, and third place was won by Bryce McKeel of Pack 258 of Rosewood.
District Executive Tom Millisor said the Cub Scouts, boys in first through the fifth grade, make incredibly fast, beautifully crafted pinewood derby cars.
The best in show for Tiger Cubs went to Christopher Stickles of Pack 11; for Wolf Cubs, Zack Davis of Pack 96; for Bear Cubs, Michael Howard of Pack 8; and for Webelos, Peyton Garland of Pack 11.
Christine Lacomb won the Big Kids Race.
Millisor said, "All of the young men who entered this year's contest showed excellent sportsmanship and true Scouting spirit, and we are all extremely proud of each of you."
Millisor said he wants to thank the Moose Lodge and its members for the continued use of their building. "They have allowed us to use their facilities over the past few years every Saturday in January and February," he said.
"Many individuals made this years Derby possible: Kevin Grundmeier, Jackie Schaeffer, T. Pate, Dale Bevell, Becky Asbury, Bruce Kearney, Michele Newsome and her children, Barbara Byers, Gregg and Cheryl Womack and their children, all of the unit leaders, the parents, the boys and Mike and Deanna Hinnant and their children."
