Pikeville receives grant
The N.C. Rural Economic Development Center has announced that it will give a $400,000 grant to the town of Pikeville for its sewer system improvements.
The grant will assist in the ongoing overhaul of the outdated sewer system. The town earlier received a $3 million grant.
Pikeville has been under a state moratorium for several years, which prevents new sewer customers from hooking on to the system. Leaking pipes were allowing far too much wastewater to enter the treatment plant on many days.
Officials have been working since 1998 to fix the problem, Mayor Tony Medlin said. The project should be finished within 18 months, finally allowing the state to end the moratorium.
The town received a $3 million grant in 2001 from the N.C. Environmental Management Commission to upgrade its sewage plant, to replace and repair the failing sewage lines, and to increase the size of its spray field.
Business Expo
The 2004 Business Expo will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Goldsboro Country Club.
The exposition is sponsored by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce and the Goldsboro News-Argus and is free to the public.
Businesses will show their products and services. Business people can meet with other business people. The event gives everyone the opportunity to see, touch and experience what products and services are available in Wayne County.
There will be 80 exhibitor booths inside and outside the country club, which is on Slocumb Street. One of the exhibitors is the state's Unclaimed Property Program. Wayne County residents can check the list to see if they are eligible to receive any unclaimed property. This is a free service.
Jazz celebration
Tickets are on sale for the Wayne Community College Foundation's jazz celebration to be held Saturday, April 3.
The $50 tickets include Nnenna Freelon in concert as well as the pre-party and reception afterwards. The festivities begin at 8 p.m. The concert will be held in Moffatt Auditorium.
Ms. Freelon, a winner of the Billie Holiday Award from the French Academie du Jazz and a five-time Grammy nominee, served as visiting artist at Wayne Community College in 1992. The Durham resident has recorded nine albums; the latest, "Live," was released in October 2003.
Proceeds will go toward scholarships for Wayne Community College students. Call the Foundation at 735-5151 for more information.
Salvation Army luncheon
The Salvation Army will have its annual barbecue luncheon March 25 from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Tickets are $6 each. They may be purchased in advance or at the door for eat-in or take-out. There will be drive-through lanes. Delivery will be available for large orders. Plates include barbecue, potato salad, slaw, hush puppies, beverage and homemade cake.

Advance Auto coming
An Advance Auto Store is under construction on the west side of North Berkeley Boulevard between Graves Drive and Cashwell Drive in front of United Artists Theater.
The 7,000-square-foot building will be on .65 acres and will have 42 parking spaces.
