'Mockingbird' stage play wraps up project

The countywide Wayne County Reads project wraps up with the stage version of the book "To Kill A Mockingbird" at Wayne Community College.
It will be performed March 11-14 in the college's Moffatt Auditorium.
The play, dramatized by Christopher Sergel from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Harper Lee, deals with social injustice in the South during the Depression.
It is the story of a white lawyer, Atticus Finch, played by Goldsboro attorney Geoff Hulse, defending a black man -- Tom Robinson, played by James Bynum -- falsely accused of rape. The story is told from the viewpoint of the lawyer's daughter, Scout, played by Lura Hulse.
The cast is made up of actors from the community, WCC students, and college faculty and staff. The play is directed by Margaret Boothe Baddour and produced by Kathryn Spicer.
Performances are set for 8 p.m. on March 11, 12 and 13 and 3 p.m. on March 14, with a special production for high school students at noon on March 12. Admission is $5 for adults, and $2 for children.
