Dog bites crook
A residential break-in during which the homeowner's dog attacked the thief and was, in turn, assaulted has been chosen by Goldsboro-Wayne County Crime Stoppers as its latest "Crime of the Week."
The break-in occurred between 6 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. Jan. 15 at a home in the 800 block of East Elm Street in Goldsboro. After the intruder entered the home, the pet dog bit the criminal, and the robber then assaulted the dog. The intruder fled, leaving behind a trail of blood. Police said the dog suffered severe injuries during the break-in.
Anyone with information on this break-in or any other crime in Wayne County was asked to call Crime Stoppers at 735-2255. Callers may remain anonymous, and they may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $1,000, if their information leads to arrests in felony cases.
Two hurt in wreck
Two people were injured in a three-car collision at 1:16 p.m. Friday at East Mulberry at North Lionel streets, Goldsboro police said.
One driver, Maddie Shanee Mickins, 21, of East Walnut Street, and a passenger in another car, Leola D. Gordon, 73, of Clairmont Drive, were treated and released from Wayne Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Gordon's driver, Eddie Lee Gordon, 77, of Clairmont Circle, was charged with a yield violation. Police said Gordon's southbound auto collided with the westbound car that Ms. Mickins was driving and an eastbound car driven by Edith S. Shepherd, 59, of North Spence Avenue. Damages were estimated at $3,700.
Also, damages were set at $6,000 in a two-vehicle crash at 7:05 p.m. Friday on North Park Drive near Cuyler Best Road, police said.
One driver, Matthew Timothy Finan, 25, of Pine Needles Road, was charged with a safe-movement violation. Police said Finan's sport utility vehicle collided with a westbound van driven by Shannon Renee Weavil, 31, of Lakehurst Drive, Dudley.
Break-ins
A teen-ager was arrested Friday by Wayne County sheriff's officers and charged with three felony crimes in connection with a break-in at a neighbor's home.
Dayton Jamal Wells, 17, of Lees Country Club Road, Mount Olive, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,000 secured bond.
Wells was accused of breaking into the Lynda Dubose home Jan. 20 on Lees Country Club Road and stealing about $3,600 worth of property, including jewelry, Detective Sgt. Carl Lancaster said. Some property has been recovered. Mount Olive Police Maj. Ralph Schroeder assisted in the arrest.
Three felonies
A teen-ager from Goldsboro was arrested Friday by Goldsboro police and charged with three felony offenses.
Perez Donovan McDuffie, 17, of Fourth Street was charged with breaking and entering, larceny and possession of stolen goods. He was placed in the Wayne County Jail in lieu of a $4,500 secured bond.
Investigation
About 30 cassette tapes, two necklaces, three rings, a jacket, a small recorder, $75 and other property were stolen between Thursday and Friday from an unlocked car in the 200 block of Rollingwood Drive near Dudley, according to reports filed by Wayne County sheriff's deputies.
The resident, Perry Lee, put a $760 value on his property, in addition to the money.
Missing
Two teen-aged girls were reported missing Friday to Wayne County authorities
*Laquinda Shantel Barrett, 14, of 915-A Hugh St. was described as black, 5-feet-10 and 120 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and a light complexion. When she was seen last at 2 a.m. Friday, she was wearing a white shirt, blue jeans, white athletic shoes and a brown coat.
*Barbara Lee Motter, 16, of 189 Colonial Drive was described as black, 5-feet-11 and 240 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. When she was seen last at 8 a.m. Friday, she was wearing a gray pullover shirt, blue jeans and tennis shoes.
Anyone with information on the location of either girl was asked to call Goldsboro police at 736-4933 or the Wayne County Sheriff's Office at 731-1481.
