Southern Wayne receives grant

Southern Wayne High School was one of 15 schools in the state selected to receive a grant aimed at strengthening its environmental education efforts.
The $700 grant will be used to enhance environmental education in the school. Each winning application conveyed a strong desire to improve student achievement and provide opportunities for problem solving and environmental stewardship.
Julie West, a science teacher at Southern Wayne High, said the school has purchased student and teacher publications that focus on environmental education initiatives.
The school also ordered videos pertaining to environmental issues. The resources will be kept in the media center for easy student accessibility.
Funding for grant winners this year is provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards.
The EPA has contributed to the Project Tomorrow Environmental Education Model Library Grant Program in partnership with the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Office of Environmental Education, since 1995.
Judy Pope, program manager for the state Office of Environmental Education, said she hopes that the awarding of the grant conveys to educators that many people are interested in environmental education efforts, and support teachers' desires, to provide the best in resources and experiences for students.
