Session end near? General Assembly reportedly in the short rows in Raleigh

Word has it that the leaders of both chambers of the General Assembly are saying they believe the end of the current session is just around the corner.

We are glad to hear it. We are always happy when lawmakers find a way to get their work done expeditiously, and we commend the men and women who serve in the legislature for running an efficient operation. Of course, things run more smoothly when one party is in control, and the Republican majority has that advantage, much like the Democrats had for many years.

A state budget plan will emerge from negotiations between the House and Senate, and Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is likely to veto it. Little matter, since the Republicans who control both chambers have the necessary votes to override his no.

We're just glad to get the lawmakers out of Raleigh. No offense to our local representatives, but we find ourselves breathing a little easier when the legislature is out of session.
