Civility: Where has politeness gone in this modern age?

To read some of the comments you find on Facebook and other social media it makes you wonder sometimes what ever happened to civility.

Rants and raves are everywhere. People hate the president. People hate people who hate the president. People hate people of other races and nationalities and religions. And they aren't shy about putting their feelings online for anyone to read.

It goes on and on and shows no sign of letting up, only growing.

People seem to show their worst side when they have the anonymity of the internet to hide behind and their posts on social media sites are often in poor taste. Don't they see the end result of what this is doing to our society? We are becoming a nation, and world, of complainers, of haters.

Maybe the hate was always there, just hidden because there was no way to communicate it. Maybe having the internet at their disposal stokes in some people their basest emotions. We don't know. All we know is that we are sickened by much of what we read. The nation needs a return to civility, as least a modicum of it.
