Remember every day: Memorial Day should not be only day for honoring heroes

Monday was Memorial Day, and we hope that you found time to honor, in your own way, the men and women who sacrificed their lives in the defense of our nation.

Too many people see the holiday as just a day to party, to get off work, maybe go to the beach, and have a good time. All that is fine and well, but if we forget why we are observing the day, then we are not the Americans we claim to be.

Every day should, in some small way, be Memorial Day. We should daily remember the sacrifices of the soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines who gave their lives to keep America free.

So even as you return to your normal routines this week, keep those men and women in mind. And think of them often. Every time you speak your mind about some political topic, every time you enter a house of worship, every time you openly criticize the government, remember the people who gave their all so you could have the right to do those things we take for granted.
