Technical achievement: Wayne youth doing well in technical competition

News that Wayne County students are doing well in technical competitions is welcome and reassuring.

The economy and workplace of the future will be dependent on labor that is well trained in technology, and it is good to know that the schools in this county are doing a good job of teaching the necessary skills to our young people.

We are not technically gifted. After decades of watching a press run, we still don't understand how the machine works. And getting the DVD player to function is a major achievement.

But 10 years from now, the average person will have to be knowledgeable about a lot of the technical aspects of life in order to hold a good job, or simply run a household. It is progress, like it or not.

Social media is one example of the growing reliance on technology to get done what a modern world expects. Communication, the glue that holds society together, is dependent upon it more every day.

Our educators recognize that the future will require us to be familiar with technology, to be comfortable with it and proficient at it. We're lucky we have people in our county who have the talent and foresight to see to it that our young people are ready for what is coming.
