Bonds approved: Sale of city bonds will help with streets, sports complex

Almost overlooked among the results from the election last week was the approval by Goldsboro voters of $10 million in bonds for street work and construction of a multi-sports complex near Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

It was a wise decision by residents, who approved both referendums by wide margins.

No additional taxes will be needed to repay the bond debt, city officials say. And the sale of the bonds will allow the projects to move ahead without delay.

The street work is badly needed in certain areas of the city. Some of the $7 million in street funds will go to resurfacing, and some will go to new road construction.

The $3 million in parks and recreation funding will permit the city to proceed with construction of the sports complex, which is expected to boost tourism revenue.

All in all, it was a smart decision by city residents. No one likes to borrow money. But the two bond votes will go a long way toward improving the city's infrastructure, with the least pain in the pocketbook.
