Press presence: President-elect's treatment of press doesn't bode well

President-elect Donald Trump has already made a habit of ditching the Washington press corps whenever it suits him.

That doesn't bode well for the next four years.

It is the job of the press to keep up with what the president of this country is doing, and for Trump to keep the press at bay means keeping the people of the country -- millions of whom voted for him -- in the dark about his actions.

It's no secret that Trump holds the national media in disdain. He routinely referred to it as dishonest during his campaign. But now that he has become the president-elect, he needs to open up more and allow the public access to his goings and comings. He will be, after all, the president of and for the people. To that end, every president and president-elect in recent memory has traveled with a pool of journalists when leaving the White House.

A Trump spokesman said this week that his team of advisers is working on setting up a press protocol for allowing journalists access. Let's hope they come up with something soon. The people of this country deserve to know what their elected leader is doing.
