Empty stockings: Please consider giving to the Empty Stocking Fund

It doesn't seem possible, but the Empty Stocking Fund drive is already underway.

The fund was created more than a century ago by Goldsboro women concerned about needy children at the holidays.

They came to the publisher of The News-Argus and asked if there was anything the paper could do to generate public awareness of the problem. And so the Empty Stocking Fund was created as a way to help those children who normally would go without at Christmas.

But the fund has always depended on the generosity of residents to whom a hungry, toyless Christmas is unthinkable.

It has depended on you.

And so we ask again this year that you donate to the fund. Every penny goes directly to buy toys and clothes for needy children. All the work is done by volunteers.
