Thank a cop: Law enforcement officers deserve our support

In the wake of the slaying of five police officers in Dallas last week there has been much talk of the role of law enforcement officers in our society.

And there has also been an outpouring of support for officers across the nation.

An Associated Press report says that people have come out of the woodwork, so to speak, to show their appreciation for their local police. In case after case, people have gone out of their way to show their local law enforcement officers that they have the overwhelming support of the residents they have sworn to protect.

"We need them," said one woman who placed single roses on the cars of police officers in her city.

We should all follow her example. Some people have had run-ins with the police and do not trust them. That is sad because officers for the large part want to be our friends and earn our trust so that they can better serve the community at large.

So take the time to show an officer of the law that you care. You don't have to give flowers. A handshake and a word of thanks will do just fine.
