Justice: Slayings of police officers call for strongest penalty possible

The killing of five police officers in Dallas is a heinous crime that boggles the mind.

We cannot understand why anyone would take someone else's life, much less the lives of five others who have sworn to protect the public.

It is a reminder of how dangerous the life of a police officer is and ironically why officers might be quick to draw their weapon when confronted with a situation they believe might turn deadly in a second. The protests that sparked the incident were set off by just that kind of reaction by law enforcement officers.

The perpetrator of these killings is dead. But people like him, who kill law enforcement officers doing their duty, deserve swift justice.

We believe in the death penalty. That is what the killers of police officers deserve.
