Take time for Memorial Day: Today is the day when we remember fallen heroes

Today is a day we set aside to remember the men and women who have died in the line of duty, defending our nation and our freedom.

It's not about an extra day to go to the beach or to go shopping for a holiday deal, but a chance to really stop and try to grasp the significance of the moment, to recall the lives that were surrendered so that we can live lives that are free from tyranny.

Freedom, it is said, is not something that is automatically passed down from one generation to another. It must be continually earned. And the men and women who sacrificed all in the name of freedom deserve our attention and our tributes, whether they are great or small.

Today, all across this country, people will gather to remember the deceased veterans who gave their lives for their country. We should all take time to do just that, to remember that what we often take for granted we owe to a noble few who died on our behalf.

For many people who have lost loved ones in the service of our great nation, every day is Memorial Day. We should be able to take just one and use it for that purpose.
