Highway to the future: Bypass marks milestone in Wayne County history

The opening of the new Goldsboro bypass on Friday heralds a new day in the history of Wayne County.

Roads, historically, are the heralds of economic development and growth. And the new 20-mile stretch of freeway will help boost the Wayne County economy in ways that we cannot yet imagine.

No longer will travelers dread the stoplights and roundabout that have marked east-west movement through the county.

The leaders of Goldsboro and Wayne County can proudly take credit for pushing the completion of the roadway, but it is the vision of men such as the late Sens. Henson Barnes and John Kerr that really put the new highway on the map.

We are forever in their debt.
