Working as one: Cooperation is the key to improving quality of life

Officials with the city, county and Air Force base met this week to discuss common goals, and from the talk generated Wayne seems on the verge of a new day.

4th Fighter Wing commander Col. Mark Slocum reiterated his call for better schools in the county. Slocum has been blunt in his assessment of the Wayne school system, noting that he has military families sending their children to school outside the county in hopes of obtaining a better education.

But Goldsboro and Wayne officials assured him and others present that they are committed to improving the local schools, not only to provide a better educational environment for the children of airmen but for all students in the county.

And other positives were noted, from the planned construction of a multi-sports complex to the opening today of the long-awaited U.S. 70 bypass.

All of the above could not be possible without the cooperation of city, county and base leaders and the people of Wayne, who know that working together is always the best way to get things done.
