Tax cuts? This time, put some real relief into ordinary taxpayers' budgets

The General Assembly reconvened Monday to tweak the state budget and with this being an election year, lawmakers have indicated they will be looking at cutting taxes.

Let's hope they are true to their word and consider making income tax cuts that would help middle and lower class taxpayers, who have seen little in the way of tax help despite the much-ballyhooed cuts of the past several years.

We are much like the letter writer who a few weeks ago wrote, "With all the back slapping and news coverage, I have one question, who got these tax cuts? My reward has been a sizable tax increase, not a decrease."

We feel the same way. We haven't seen our tax bills do anything but go up as well while the politicians have taken credit for lowering taxes.

We understand legislators might be considering raising the standard deduction. That is one fine idea. Let's hope they can come up with even more ways to reduce the tax burden on average folks.
