Old Foster Center: To save aging structure, community would have to step up

With the new W.A. Foster Center at Mina Weil Park up and running, the question turns to what to do with the old Foster Center at the corner of Leslie and Corney streets.

The structure, built in 1938, is all that remains of what was once a thriving black business and community area. And it remains near and dear to the hearts of many in that area who remember how important it was.

But the building is in poor condition and is full of asbestos. To fully rehabilitate the building and make it useful again would take an estimated $1 million -- money the city does not have and for which there are no grants available.

Some would say the smartest thing would be to tear the building down and use the property for other community-oriented purposes.

But that is not an option for many, who want to see the structure preserved.

It seems that if the building is to be saved it will take a significant contribution from private groups and individuals, who could work with the city to save the center from the wrecking ball. After all, it is the community that wants to see it preserved.
