Good deal: Plan for sports complex exemplifies city and military teamwork

The camaraderie between the city of Goldsboro and the Seymour Johnson Air Force Base was never on fuller display than this week, when the two signed an agreement that will lead to the creation of a a 62-acre sports complex near the base.

The city and the base will share the complex, which will feature eight multi-sport fields on land owned by the Air Force and leased by the city.

The city will pay for the construction and maintenance of the complex, using money from a number of sources, including the city's hotel occupancy tax. That is appropriate, since the facility is expected to draw visitors from out of town for soccer tournaments and the like, boosting the local economy.

The Air Force also will have access to the complex for sports and training, adding to the symbiosis that marks the relationship between the city and the base.

It's a good deal for both.
