Filling up: Shriners Fish Fry is about much more than a good meal

They don't do it for the fanfare -- or in hopes of adding members to their ranks.

They don't do it for the many compliments that come their way after local residents take their first bite of seemingly perfectly fried fish.

And when our local Shriners walk away from their annual fish fry with hands covered in batter and clothes smelling of grease, they have smiles on their faces.

They know where the proceeds from the event are going to go -- and each has a story about a child who has benefited from their kindness.

Money raised from the sale of fish plates today at Herman Park and in Mount Olive helps provide free health care to children under the age of 18.

No strings attached. Really.

So when you're making your lunch and dinner plans, consider passing a few dollars to those who are working hard today to ensure every child has hope.

You might just find that your heart has ended up feeling as full as your stomach.
