At last: After weeks of debating, budget battle ends in a hurry

There were some people who really thought that the General Assembly would have to put up a Christmas tree in the statehouse.

That's how long the budget process was taking -- much longer than it ever had previously.

However, at long last, the budget has been approved and the governor has signed it into law.

It is still astonishing to think that a party that holds control of both the House and the Senate would need a record number of days to agree on a budget.

But the bottom line is -- it's done.

There are some interesting parts of the state's spending plan -- and there will be more arguments about them even though the battle is over.

It will be interesting to see if the plan is able to deliver on its promises of fiscal restraint and responsibility while moving the state forward.

Only time will tell.
