Time to vote: City needs you to cast your vote to determine new leadership

The worst part of non-presidential year elections -- especially when they are hyper-local -- is that people don't think they matter.

So, because the vote is not a priority, the turnout is very low -- if people remember, or bother, to vote at all.

But the thing is, these elections are just as important as that presidential contest -- in fact, more so.

The people whom you elect will make decisions that directly affect your tax money, your community, your neighborhood and your future.

The votes they take and the projects they fund could be the difference between selling your house at a loss or being able to watch your investment grow.

The decisions they make for your neighborhood will determine what services you can expect and how much you will have to pay for them.

And the plans they devise could attract the attention of potential industrial or business investors -- or send them somewhere else.

So while it might be tempting to miss the primary vote Oct. 6, or the early voting opportunity that leads up to the official date, this is not the time to stay at home.

The mayor and city council members -- for those of you who have a multi-candidate field -- are critical cogs in the machine that makes your city run. And their choice should not be left up to chance.

Read what the candidates have to say in today's edition and decide which one will do the best job.

Then, come on out and let your voice be heard.
