Warning bell: Hazing and inappropriate acts -- it's time for a fraternity reboot

It would be wrong to paint with too wide a brush when talking about the fraternity systems at some major U.S. universities.

There are some organizations that have behaved responsibly and that treat their members and the rest of the university community with respect.

And there are those who have made racist and ridiculous remarks, those that have had to defend themselves against sexual assault claims and others that have violated rules against hazing, with tragic results.

And there are those that have had alcohol-fueled parties and other inappropriate behavior, but have not yet been caught.

Here's the bottom line: This is the sort of thing that needs to be brought into the light. Those who care about and who support fraternities and sororities on campus should demand that this issue is addressed quickly.

Alumni who demand better behavior from those who are carrying on the traditions at their alma mater are not just protecting young people from themselves. They are protecting the reputation and future of their organizations.

And universities have to do a better job as well. If there is a fraternity and sorority on campus, it should be subject to scrutiny.

That is how we make sure that young people don't make mistakes that will destroy their lives -- or end someone else's.

Education is critical as well. Sororities should make sure that young women know how to protect themselves. And fraternities need to talk with pledges and others about speaking up when they witness inappropriate behavior.

This is not just "boys will be boys." There is no excuse for dangerous irresponsibility.

And there should be no tolerance for an administration or fraternal organization that does not keep its own house clean.
