A new chance: Just think -- this year's Relay could be the one to remember ... because of you

They take to the track for different reasons -- the thousands who turn out each year for an event that, in many ways, helps to define the very spirit of Wayne County.

And as another Relay for Life unfolds Friday at the county fairgrounds, the emotions that seem to characterize the gathering will likely be worn on the sleeves of those lighting luminarias, releasing balloons and selling homemade treats.

But attending Relay is not reserved, entirely, for those who have battled -- and are battling -- cancer and the loved ones of those who have lost their fights.

Rather, it is a chance for all of us to witness bravery and courage -- to feel pure love and great sorrow at the same time.

And one could argue that it is those moments, when shared, that truly create a community.

Just think about what could be accomplished if every Wayne County resident put a friend in the car and stopped by the event -- if only for a fresh pulled pork sandwich or slice of cake.

Think about the donation that could be made to the American Cancer Society this year -- and how that money could be used to wage a war that, if you believe in statistics, will likely show itself on your doorstep one day.

And even if you had no money to spend, think about how your perspective could change if you, for even a moment, could shake the hand of a young man who battled a brain tumor or a young mother whose cancer tale has entered a new chapter.

For those reasons and so many more, we know where we will be tomorrow night. Join us.
