Back in Raleigh: Legislature is about to tackle a very light, but important, agenda

Nothing makes a taxpayer more nervous than the news that the state legislature is back in town.

Well, other than the news that Congress is back in Washington, that is. But we digress.

It is well-known that the arrival of state leaders in Raleigh usually ends in not only a bunch of arguing, but also with a brand new round of reasons why state government needs more money.

But perhaps not this time.

The General Assembly has promised that this will be a rather limited gathering, focused on getting some work done quickly.

And that is good news. The longer they are up there, the more likely we are to have to pay more bills.

Wayne County is lucky -- as are many of the other citizens in eastern North Carolina counties. We have a legislative team that seems more focused on serving its communities than what the going political party line might be.

They know when to focus and to get the work done and how to work together.

It will be interesting to hear their take on where North Carolina is moving next and how it will find an economical way to get there.

Perhaps they can help North Carolina's legislators from bigger cities focus a little more on getting the job done and less on partisanship.

One can only hope.
