Welcome 2014: Resolutions for this year should include new perspective

A new year brings more than just a change of date.

It is a chance to sit back, to review what has transpired in the past and then to make plans for the coming 12 months.

And as 2014 dawns, there are many people who will do just that.

But as we plan for the next stages of our own lives and what the future holds, we should pause to think back, too.

There is much to be proud of in Wayne County. There are people who care greatly about their community and their neighbors. They are there during good times and bad, and they make a difference every day.

This community is full of volunteers who give of themselves every day in a myriad of ways -- and they will be a big part of making this a great place to live in 2014, too.

There is plenty to work on, too. And part of celebrating a new year is thinking not only about what has been accomplished, but what still remains to be done.

There are many discussions that need to be had and priorities reset -- especially in some of the county's governmental bodies. We will watch those closely in 2014.

There are concerns that need to be addressed -- and it will take input from all over the county to make sure they are handled.

So the resolution list for 2014 for anyone who lives in and loves Wayne County begins with a simple charge -- get involved.

This is not a year to sit back and watch as elected officials make decisions for your community -- or to keep silent if you have some bit of wisdom to offer.

This is also the year to be part of the efforts to make life better here. Have a cause you are passionate about? Join others who are joining forces to improve the county.

It's up to all of us to make this a great new year.
