A resolution: Make a promise now to keep more of your money

Let's make a pact now -- before the ball, the acorn or the pickle drop and before the politicians have a chance to come up with some other way to waste tax dollars.

Let's vow to make keeping more of our money in our own hands a top priority in 2014.

Now, for those extremists who think that means spending no money or developing unrealistic expectations for what it takes to run a county, city, state or federal government, stand down.

We mean demanding less government, smarter spending and abandoning the assumption that those in charge in Raleigh and Washington know best what to do with our hard-earned dollars.

And the good news is, most people do a pretty good job of deciding where to put their money. They start and maintain businesses, support charities and schools and share with their neighbors who are in need.

They make purchases that keep the economy going and send their children to college.

Truth is, they make better decisions than any politician or government ever could.

It is time to dump the government-knows-best model. It hasn't worked yet.

And 2014 is our chance to make a fresh start.
