Slow, steady: 'Too quick' results in bad decision-making at all levels

It is a time-honored -- and much proven -- fact that those who rush to make changes and decisions just to make changes and decisions live to regret them.

And such is the case as we continue to watch the decisions unfold at the state level.

It seems that after years of not having the power to change anything, the new leadership seems to feel they have to change everything -- and as quickly as possible.

And that is when mistakes happen.

That's why Gov. Pat McCrory's call for a slowdown on the abortion bill is a wise one. It doesn't mean he doesn't agree with the intent of the bill -- he just wants to make sure it covers the bases responsibly.

That is what a leader is supposed to do -- make sure we get it right.

There are times to act with haste -- and there are times to make sure that the actions are well-thought-out, prudent and will have the desired effect without creating an unforeseen additional concern. This is one of those times.

There is plenty of time to get legislation passed and new policies in place. But such decisions require restraint, research and a little patience.

And we need more of the latter in the statehouse.
