Trash pickup: More volunteers needed to keep roadways clean

It is too bad we can't fine everyone who tosses out a cup or throws trash alongside a highway -- but the truth is, we can't.

There are not enough law enforcement or other personnel to keep tabs on those who make littering the area's highways a habit and who cannot be bothered with disposing of their garbage properly.

But there is something that can be done to clean up the community.

All of us can stop and pick up trash when we see it -- and volunteers can adopt a stretch or roadway to police once a month for garbage.

It is not the ideal solution. It would be much better to put litterbugs in orange jumpsuits picking up trash along the highways, but it simply is not practical.

Perhaps if some of us become more vigilant and take a small bite out of the problem, we can make it better.

It is certainly worth a try.
