Karen Shonita Taylor and Troy Daniel McAdams exchanged vows in a double-ring ceremony Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. at Philadelphia Community Church, with bishop Jerome Stokes and elder Arnold Thornton officiating.

The bride is the daughter of pastor Rodger L. Taylor Jr. and Aletta N. Taylor of Goldsboro and the granddaughter of the late Rodger L. Taylor and Helen Taylor Anderson and Sarah Newkirk Pearson of Goldsboro and the late Edward Lee Jordan.

She is a graduate of Winston-Salem State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and Concordia University in Irvine, Calif., with a master’s degree in international business. She is employed as an instructor at Shanghai Pinghe Bilingual School in Shanghai, China.

The groom is the son of Jem McAdams and Terri McAdams of Vista, Calif., and the grandson of Ruth McAdams of Oceanside, Calif., the late Sam McAdams and Henry Rupee of Vista, Calf., and the late Marilyn Rupee.

He graduated from California State University with a bachelor’s degree in English. He is employed as a teacher in the international baccalaureate program at Shanghai Pinghe Bilingual School in Shanghai, China, and coaches local sports programs.

The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents.

She wore an A-line gown that grew full from the waist and flowed into a two-foot train. It had a bodice adorned with white sequins. Crystal stone flowers cinched each loop of the draped skirt, while a loop lace-up closed the back of the bodice. The gown had three-quarter-length sheer sleeves.

Her headpiece was a full veil harnessed by a jeweled crown.

The bride carried a bouquet of plum and green roses and green day lilies with plum and green ribbon streamers.

Nicole Freebourne of Shrewsbury, Pa., was matron of honor, while Kamia Shamone Taylor, of Algonquin, Ill., sister of the bride, was maid of honor.

Bridesmaids were Andra McAdams of Placentia, Calif., and Jana McAdams of Vista, Calif., sisters of the groom; Alethea Bonello of Riverdale, Ga., Leslie Greene of Owings Mills, Md., and Chanel Speaks of Joppa, Md., friends of the couple; and Stephanie Anderson Upshaw of Ladson, S.C., aunt of the bride.

Ryan McAdams of San Diego, Calif., brother of the groom, was best man.

Groomsmen were Richard Taylor of Goldsboro, brother of the bride; Wendell Rupee of Oakdale, Tenn., cousin of the groom; Jem McAdams of Vista, Calif., father of the groom; and Stephen LaFata of Philadelphia, Pa., and Cole Sampson of Oceanside, Calif., friends of the couple.

Ushers were Rontrae Newkirk, cousin of the bride, and Donell Hayes, friend of the couple.

Jayden Greene of Baltimore, Md., was flower girl. Noah Harris of New Jersey and Genesis Freebourne of Shrewsbury, Md., were ringbearers.

Lynette Pelzer of Baltimore, Md., Jean Murdock, Tanya Howard and Shirley Washington of Baltimore, Md., directed the wedding. Presiding at the register was Kiana Shamone Taylor, niece of the bride. Marci Monroe and Kendra Jones of Maryland distributed the programs.

A program of wedding music was provided by elder Jewel Lee of Goldsboro, keyboardist; the Praise and Worship team of pastor Terrance and Tamara Hundley; Laneace Jones Lee of Goldsboro, Jana McAdams of California, Timothy Marshall and Randy Sneed of Baltimore, Md., vocalists; Tiffany Lloyd, bass guitarist; and Arnold Thornton Jr. and Nicholas Sams, drummers.

The bride’s parents hosted a sit-down dinner reception at Lane Tree Golf Club. A five-layer boxed design wedding cake trimmed in plum ribbon was served.

After their wedding trip to Boracay, Philippines, the couple will reside in Pudong Area, Shanghau, China.

Events held before the wedding included an engagement luncheon Aug. 7 in Vista, Calif., hosted by the groom’s family; a bride’s tea Jan. 28 at Plum Tree Bed and Breakfast hosted by friends of the bride; a groom’s luncheon Jan. 28 at McCall’s Barbecue, hosted by friends of the groom; and a surprise bridal shower Jan. 28 hosted by friends and relatives of the bride.

The groom’s parents hosted a rehearsal dinner Jan. 28 at Madison’s Restaurant.
