Melissa Annette Sutton of Goldsboro and Michael Wayne Thornton exchanged vows in a double-ring ceremony Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. at Rosewood First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry Bostian and the Rev. E. C. Mattocks officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Robert Wayne and Rachel Hall Sutton of Goldsboro and the granddaughter of Idell Britt Sutton and the late Rufus Adams Sutton of Mount Olive and Claudie B. Hall and Hazel Lee Joyner Hall of Grantham.

She is a graduate of Rosewood High School and Wayne Community College with an associate degree in early childhood education and attends Mount Olive College. She is employed as a HeadStart teacher with Wayne Action Group for Economic Solvency Inc. at Carver HeadStart school.

The groom is the son of Donnie Wayne and Kay Giddens Thornton of Newton Grove and the grandson of the late Carlton “Tot” and Inez Hawley Thornton of Bentonville and John Paul and Mary Lois Jackson Giddens of Newton Grove.

He is a graduate of Hobbton High School and Johnston Community College with an associate degree in law enforcement technology. He is employed as an instructor with Wayne Opportunity Center’s H.O.P.E. Program.

The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents.

Karla Parker Denning of Benson was her cousin’s matron of honor.

Bridesmaids were Amy Newsome Dover of Smithfield, Va., and Beth Newsome Miller and Marianne Cantey of Goldsboro, Penny Edwards Gates of Fayetteville and Cecilia Lindley Mattocks of Wilmington, friends of the bride, and Dena Thornton Mitchell of Four Oaks, sister of the groom.

Don Thornton was best man.

Groomsmen were Joshua Barfield of Mount Olive and Brent Thornton of Newton Grove, N.C., cousins of the groom; Darrell Blackman, Jason Merritt and Jeremy Best of Newton Grove, friends of the groom; Jeff Sutton of Goldsboro, brother of the bride; and Will Newsome of Goldsboro, friend of the bride.

Hannah Nicole Mitchell of Four Oaks, niece of the groom, was the junior bridesmaid.

Hunter Chloe Newell of Goldsboro, friend of the bride, was flower girl.

Nathan James Dover of Smithfield, Va., friend of the bride, was ringbearer.

Darlene Bass Newsome directed the wedding. Presiding at the register were Karrie Thornton Whitfield and Kelly Thornton McLamb. Brooke Caroline Jackson distributed programs.

A program of wedding music was provided by Beverly Justice Sager, pianist, and Jeff Lane, Virginia Taricani and Beverly Sager, vocalists.

Following the ceremony, a reception dinner was held in the church’s Braswell Hall family life center. Jennifer Thornton Mooring and Laura Moon cut the wedding cake. Linda Hall King and Tracy W. King poured punch.

After a wedding trip to Pilot Mountain and Mt. Airy, the couple resides in Rosewood.

Events held before the wedding included a surprise bridal shower Dec. 4 hosted by staff and students of Carver Head Start; a wedding/Thanksgiving dinner Nov. 25 hosted by staff and clients of Wayne Opportunity Center’s H.O.P.E. Program; a Christmas shower breakfast Nov. 22 at the home of Karrie Thornton Jackson of Grantham hosted by the groom’s family; a lingerie shower Nov. 9 at the home of the bride’s parents hosted by Karla Parker Denning, Rhonda Sutton Parker and Rachel Hall Sutton; a bridal shower Nov. 2 hosted by the Explorers Sunday school class of Rosewood First Baptist Church; and a bridal shower Oct. 26 hosted by ladies of Pleasant Union Christian Church.

The groom’s family hosted a rehearsal dinner in Braswell Hall.
