Mrs. Smith

Jo Ann Heath and Joshua Adam Smith exchanged vows in a double-ring ceremony June 3 at 3 p.m. at Emmaus Baptist Church in Dudley, with the Rev. Jerry Hannah officiating.

The bride is the daughter of the Rev. Justin and Melinda Heath and the granddaughter of Jean and Henry Rickman of South Boston, Va., and Charles and Joyce Gautier of Mount Olive.

She is a 2002 graduate of Southern Wayne High School and a 2006 graduate of Wayne Community College with an associate degree in nursing. She will be employed as a registered nurse at Wayne Memorial Hospital.

The groom is the son of Cecil Smith of Faison and Johnny and Paulette Powell of Mount Olive and the grandson of the late Emmett and Shirley Ballree of Mount Olive and the late Jack and Viola Smith.

He graduated from North Duplin High School in 2002 and Wayne Community College in 2005 from basic law enforcement training. He is employed as an officer with the Mount Olive Police Department.

The bride was escorted by her father and presented in marriage by her parents. She wore a strapless gown of matte satin, organza and lace with a bodice that featured beaded appliques along the neckline. The wrapped waistline was complemented with an asymmetrical side drape.

The a-line skirt featured multi-tiered organza lace overlays accentuated with beaded appliques and flowed into a semi-cathedral-length train.

Her two-tiered waist-length veil also was accented with beaded appliques.

She carried a bouquet of white roses and star-gazer lilies.

Lee Ann Smith of Mount Olive served her sister as matron of honor, while Crystal Hyatt of Mount Olive, friend of the bride, was maid of honor.

Bridesmaids were Heather Grantham and Heather Howell, both of Goldsboro, friends of the bride, and Skyler Smith of Mount Olive, sister of the groom.

Cecil Smith served as his son’s best man.

Groomsmen were Johnny Powell of Mount Olive, the groom’s stepfather; Chad Smith and Phillip Smith of Mount Olive, brothers of the groom; and Stanley Kelly of Mount Olive, friend of the groom.

Ushers were Matt Moore of Mount Olive, Sherman Hyatt of Mount Olive, Jonathon Woodley of Dudley and Brian Hope of Grantham, all cousins of the groom.

Ryleigh Gibson, cousin of the groom, was the flower girl. Elijah Smith, nephew of the couple, served as ringbearer.

Marie Scott, aunt of the groom, directed the wedding. Presiding at the register and distributing programs were Jonathon and Tiffany Griffin, friends of the couple.

A program of wedding music was provided by Danny Castro, pianist, and Brad Gregory and Chad and Lee Ann Smith, vocalists.

Following the ceremony, the bride’s parents held a reception at Wayne Shriner’s Club in Dudley. Jamie Gibson, cousin of the groom, poured the punch. Family friend Ida Hope served the wedding cake.

After a wedding trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., the couple will reside in Mount Olive.

Events held in the bride’s honor before the wedding included a lingerie shower May 13 hosted by Marie Scott; a miscellaneous shower held by her church family April 8 at the Mount Olive Historical Center; and a Christmas shower held Dec. 3 held by her family.

The groom’s parents held a rehearsal dinner for the couple and the wedding party June 2 at the church fellowship hall.
