PIKEVILLE -- A pick six prevented Charles B. Aycock from its second win of the season Friday evening.
AJ Dupree returned an interception 95 yards to the house, capping Greene Central's come-from-behind 38-35 victory at Hardy Talton Stadium.
"Instead of throwing a punt, I should have handed it off to Tae [Jackson] and let the defense play," Aycock head coach Steve Brooks said. "This one's on me. Our kids played as hard and with as great an effort as I've ever seen them play."
Jackson's 5-yard dive gave the Golden Falcons a 35-22 advantage in the third quarter.
As the fourth quarter wound down, the Rams closed to within 35-30 on Dupree's 23-yard scamper before Clay Matthews threw his fourth pick of the night. The sophomore signal caller finished 14 of 33 passing for 233 yards and one touchdown -- a 20-yard strike to Jaylan Robinson.
Dupree concluded the night with 203 yards and two scores on 16 carries.
Jackson paced the Golden Falcons' running attack with 150 yards and two TDs.
Alijuan Moore had an 18-yard pick six in the opening quarter.
Seth Shepherd returned a punt 45 yards and Jackson ran in the conversion to put CBA in front 28-22 at halftime.
"The kids have nothing to hang their head about," said Brooks, whose team drew 17 flags for 120 yards.
Tyler Parrish emerged as the defensive leader with nine solo stops, two assists and one tackle for loss.
"He played his tail off," Brooks said. "That kid is the heart and soul of our defense."
The Golden Falcons return to action Thursday at county rival Eastern Wayne. Kickoff is 7 p.m. at New Hope.
"Now it's a matter of how you act and how you rebound [from a loss]," Brooks said. "With the leadership of our team, we'll rebound. We've got to do it in a hurry with Eastern Wayne [coming up]. I think our kids have a ton of confidence and they'll continue to work, we'll all improve together."
