LEGION: Post 11 dumps Cary

Entering Wednesday night's game, Wayne County Post 11 had won five straight games.

They extended that streak to six with a 14-4, six-inning win over Cary Post 67 on Wednesday evening.

"The guys are playing together, they enjoy being around each other," Wayne County coach Adam Pate said. "I keep telling them to enjoy every day you get out on the field, it's a gift."

The game started as a barnburner.

Wayne County was down 2-0 in the first inning when Cary scored off of a double and a sacrifice fly.

Post 11 made the score 2-1 when Jack Casbarro hit a leadoff single, stole second and third base, then scored on a groundout. Christian Yarbrough tied the game at 2-2 when he hit a home run.

"That was only my second home run that I've hit in my high school career. I didn't think it was going out," Yarbrough said. "It just started a spark and everyone went off from there."

Cary took a 4-2 lead in the third off of a RBI double and a RBI single.

"They swung the bats really well tonight," said Pate.

In the third inning, Wayne County mounted its second comeback of the night. Will Uzzell hit a RBI double and made the score 4-3. Yarbrough tied the game at 4-4 after a RBI double. Tyler Daniels put Post 11 ahead for good with an RBI single.

"Will Uzzell, Christian Yarbrough looked great tonight in the batter's box," Pate said.

There was a controversial call when Uzzell was called out trying to steal third.

"That was a tough call, he [the umpire] had his back initially to Will."

In the sixth, Wayne County broke the game open when with the bases loaded. Casbarro was walked, Blake Gipson hit a two-RBI single and Carson Smitherman hit a RBI single. Uzzell scored on a three-base error and Kolby Harris walked to end the game.

"I just get in the box and do what I've been working on all year," Uzzell said. "I've been working hard and its paid off."

It was a tough first inning for starting pitcher Chance Howard, who gave up three walks. But he settled down and got six strikeouts. He allowed four runs in four innings. Harris threw a scoreless fifth and sixth, and had five strikeouts.

"I felt pretty good coming out of the bullpen I haven't thrown in a little while," Harris said. "My arm felt great and I just filled the strike zone up."

"Chance gave a great start and Kolby was phenomenal coming out of the bullpen," Pate said. "I thought Chance did a great job of giving us that extra inning, when he went back out for that extra inning I thought that was huge."

Wayne County put itself in position to score with 13 stolen bases.

"Now that you're playing legion ball you have to create runs and we're doing a good job of knowing when to run and when not to run. That's our M.O. play hard and run," Pate said. "Tonight, was a real test. In the fourth inning it was still a barnburner and we did a great job of staying loose and having fun.

"There's always room for improvement, but our guys are willing to get better every day."

Wayne County (8-1 overall) puts its six-game win streak on the line at home tonight against Farmville.
