Community Spotlight --Eight inducted into Goldsboro High-Dillard HOF on Saturday

The Goldsboro High Touchdown Club ushered in the newest members of the Goldsboro-Dillard Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday night, honoring eight former Earthquakes, Cougars and Tigers.

Here is a capsulized review of the honorees:

Hervy Basil Kornegay

Goldsboro High

Class of 1951

A two-year member of the Goldsboro High football team, Kornegay's playing career would have likely been more fruitful if not consistently interrupted by injuries... suffered a broken nose in 1949 and endured a pair of broken ribs during the 1950 campaign... member of the men's chorus at GHS, directed by Andy Griffith... attended Wake Forest University from 1951 to 1953 and won the Pediatric Metric Award as Outstanding Student in Pediatrics in 1957 from the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine... served as a captain in the United States Air Force from 1959 to 1961.

Wilbur Sasser

Goldsboro High

Class of 1967

Sasser, who earned professional acclaim as a coach at Havelock High School, began his athletic career as a member of the football, track and wrestling teams at GHS... was named "Most Athletic" of his senior class... played collegiately at East Carolina University from 1967 to 1970... began his head coaching career at Hobbton High School in Newton Grove, turning a woeful program around before returning to Havelock... won 12 league titles and compiled an overall coaching record of 207-76-2.

Emmitt Hamilton

Goldsboro High

Class of 1974

Starred on the football and wrestling teams at GHS before matriculating to Appalachian State in 1974... first ASU running back to be named All-Southern Conference (1975, 1977)... rushed for 2,585 yards for the Mountaineers, and ranks third in school history with a 5.8 yard-per-carry average... owns two of the longest runs from scrimmage in Appalachian State history -- 90 yards versus Marshall and 85 yards on the road versus South Carolina -- in 1977.

John Peterson

Goldsboro High

Class of 1980

An All-Mideastern Conference performer in 1978, Peterson established then-school records for both rushing yards in a game (252) and touchdowns (5) versus Wilmington Hoggard... named the 1979 WGBR Offensive Player of the Year... played collegiately at N.C. State University, earning a pair of varsity letters... served as Vice President of Burlington Industries and currently owns The Peterson Agency.

Maj. Gen. Al Aycock

United States Army

Goldsboro High

Class of 1974

A member of both the football and wrestling outfits, Aycock won the 1974 eastern regional individual wrestling title before leading GHS to a state crown... graduate of the United State Military Academy at West Point, where he made the Commandant's List... served in the U.S. Army for over 37 years... commanded an infantry anti-armor company in the 82nd Airborne Division...  earned two Distinguished Service medals, three Legion of Merit medals, six Meritorious Service medals and a global War on Terrorism Expeditionary medal... currently retired.

Danny Bunn

Goldsboro High

Class of 1979

Excelled as a member of the football, wrestling and track and field teams while a student at GHS... won the 4A individual wrestling title as a junior in 1978... was a scholarship athlete at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until injuries derailed his playing days... currently resides in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands... supervisor with The Home Depot.

T.C. Coley

Dillard High

Class of 1950

Starred at defensive back for the 1950 Dillard High state title-winning football team... worked with Wayne County youth for 39 years as a member of the staff at the W.A. Foster Center... recognized by the City of Goldsboro in 1984 for 25 years of service, and in 1992 for continual dedication and leadership at the W.A. Foster Center... received the Excellence and Service Award in 2013 by the African-American Pioneer | N.C. Parks and Recreation organizations.

Michael Winbush

Goldsboro High

Class of 1980

After graduating from GHS, Winbush starred for the Winston-Salem State University football team from 1980 to 1984... Most Valuable Player of the CIAA championship game in 1984... ranks fifth in all-time passing yards at WSSU... also played minor league baseball with the Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers... coached softball at his alma mater from 1993 to 2000, winning the C.E. "Big House" Gaines award in 2000... presently teaches health and physical education at Carver High in Winston-Salem.
