Wrestling -- Rosewood cruises to third round playoff appearance

DENTON -- Rosewood High took its first step in pursuit of another N.C. High School Athletic Association 1A wrestling dual-team state title on Tuesday, defeating Neuse Charter, 68-12, to establish a third-round clash tonight with Edenton Holmes.

The effort, a bother-me-not affair in which Joey Behrend picked up his 100th career victory, moved the Eagles to 49-3 this season.

"We had a solid team effort against Neuse Charter," RHS head coach Bill Edmundson said. "Being in the same conference, we have seen each other several times this season. There were no surprises."

The sledding figures to be tougher tonight, however, with RHS facing a Holmes (11-9) outfit that is traditionally potent in the upper weight classes.

"We are inexperienced in those weights, so we will probably give up a few points there," Edmundson noted.

Should Rosewood advance, it will square off versus the winner of South Stanly (22-6) and Uwharrie Charter (26-1), which has been ranked No. 1 in the state all season.

Third-round matchups are slated to begin at 6 p.m., while the regional final will start at 7:30 p.m.

Admission for the event is $6.
