FOXFIRE VILLAGE -- The Charles B. Aycock women's golf team toured the Red Fox course at Foxfire Golf and Resort in 298 on Monday, good enough for eighth place after opening-round play of the N.C High School Athletic Association 3-A State Championship.

Senior Abby Sauls paced the Lady Blues, putting together nines of 41-49 for a round of 90. Junior Savannah Strickland fired a 103 (50-53), while senior Leah Campbell signed for a 105 (48-57).

The 5,645-yard layout, beset early by showers, yielded just one sub-par round on the day --  a 3-under par 69 by Rockingham County senior and UNC-Greensboro commit Hailey Joy.

In total, 23 players recorded scores of 100 or higher, and just seven players broke 80.

Sauls, who has anchored the Aycock program for the last three years, enters the final round in a tie for 27th place.

The Lady Blues begin the final round this morning at 8:45 a.m. in a pairing with Lee County and Triton High.

Strickland will tee off in the No. 3 slot, followed by Campbell at 8:54 a.m. Sauls will complete the pairing with a 9:03 starting time.
