University of Mount Olive weekend notebook

MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive men's soccer jumped out to an early lead on Saturday at Amon Field, then played sound defense en route to  a 3-nil victory over Conference Carolinas opponent King University.  

The shutout moved the Trojans to 7-4-1 overall this season, and 3-2-1 in league play.

Nikolai Iotov scored just 16 minutes into the match, and had his effort followed by an own-goal later in the opening half.

Daniel Olaniran's goal -- his first as a Trojan -- provided the final margin of victory.

Preston Snyder played well in goal for UMO, collecting three saves while playing all 90 minutes.

UMO next sees action on Oct. 18 versus Limestone.

Blaine, Mumford roll

MOUNT OLIVE -- Kendall Blaine and Lauren Mumford scored two goals apiece on Saturday, propelling the University of Mount Olive to a 4-2 triumph over Conference Carolinas foe King University at Amon Field.

Blaine found the net at the 30-minute mark, then again on an assist from Selena Montelongo in the 75th minute.

Mumford scored her first just before halftime on an assist from Hannah Kirk, then struck again to open the second half.

Sterling Morris earned the win in goal for UMO, stopping two of four Tornado shots.

The victory moved UMO to 3-10-0 overall (2-5-0 CC). It travels to Gaffney, S.C.  on Oct. 18 for a matchup with Limestone.

Netters swept

MOUNT OLIVE -- The University of Mount Olive women's volleyball team fell in straight sets to Belmont Abbey, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-13, on Friday at Kornegay Arena.

The Trojans, who travel to Chowan on Tuesday, now stand 8-12 (4-5 CC) on the season.

Hall, UMO shine

CHARLOTTE -- Jereamy Hall's personal-best 8k time of 24:13 paced the University of Mount Olive to a first-place finish at last week's Queen City Invitational.

In addition to Hall, five UMO runners -- Tai Smith (24:38), Alexandre Durand (24:48), Colin Fisher (24:53), Daniel Francken (24:56) and Jacob Gonzalez (24:57) -- all logged top-10 finishes.

Hall's effort moved the Trojans past five Division I programs, including Davidson, Western Carolina, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian and Spartanburg Methodist.

UMO next races on Oct. 20, when it vies for the Conference Carolinas championship.

Hanle breaks record

CHARLOTTE -- Leah Hanle broke her own school record last week en route to a second-place finish at the Queen City Invitational in Charlotte.

As a team, UMO finished in second place.

Hanle's 5k time was complemented by Celine Ritter, who toured the course in 17:53 and a seventh-place finish. Shona Blades also ran well, finishing in 18:38.

UMO next races on Oct. 20 in the Conference Carolinas Championship.
