Volleyball --Aycock wins thriller versus South Central

PIKEVILLE --  Arlanda Faulkner had a career-high 38 kills, senior setter Hannah Carter provided 46 assists and libero Cassandra Lassiter provided clutch defensive play as Charles B. Aycock turned back ECC foe South Central, 3-2, in a scintillating five-setter on Tuesday.

Trailing 2-1 and struggling against a fundamentally sound SC unit, the Lady Blues pieced together a white-knuckle rally in the fourth set that was capped by a Daelyn Brock kill and a 27-25 victory.

The real drama, however, unfolded per point in the fifth stanza.

Aycock assumed a quick 5-2 advantage in the race to 15, only to see unforced errors draw matters to a tie at 10-all.

And that's when Faulkner took over.

A thunderous kill gave CBA a 12-11 lead, and following three straight service errors by both teams, the Taylor (Ind.) University commit -- who endured a cramp in her foot during the fourth set -- stepped to the line and ended the proceedings with a jump-serve laser to the 4-spot.

"I told her, stay on the ground... and she looks at me and shakes her head no," head coach Tangela Faulkner said. "And she gave it the floater... it was in the cards for these girls."

The 25-22, 21-25, 26-28, 27-25, 15-13 marathon saw many CBA players in solid form, but most notably Aycock's big three.

In addition to logging the 1,000th kill of her career, Faulkner also had 13 digs. Carter provided 11 digs and Lassiter, who never appeared out of place all evening, registered 41 digs for the match.

There's no rest for the weary, however. CBA, now 12-7 overall and 6-6 in ECC play, travels to face Cleveland High today.
