WILSON -- The monster appeared again.
This time in the sixth inning.
Clinging to a precarious three-run advantage, Wayne County Post 11 struggled to send Wilson Post 13 back the dugout. Consecutive two-out errors extended the frame and led to a back-breaking, gut-wrenching seven-run outburst.
Wayne County never recovered.
Post 13 secured a series-clinching 13-8 victory at venerable Fleming Stadium and meets Pitt County Post 39 for the Area I East Division crown. Game 1 is today.
High Point U commit Tanner Wells paced Wayne County's offense with three hits, two RBI and a run scored. Carlyle Smith (RBI), Lance Wise (RBI) and Hayden Amodeo filed two hits apiece in the scorebook. One night earlier, Amodeo swatted a home run in a season-best 4-for-4, five-RBI effort as Post 11 rolled to a mercy-rule win.
Jack Casbarro (RBI), Kolby Harris and Derek Neal (RBI) provided one hit apiece.
Post 11 led 6-1 through 31/2 innings.
Wilson shaved the deficit to 8-5 on five hits, two wild pitches and a defensive miscue at the plate. Post 13 found its offensive rhythm in the sixth and Wayne County's shaky defense helped aid the dramatic turnaround.
Post 11 righty Kolby Harris took the loss.
Wayne County ended the year 14-11 overall.
"We had a lot of positives from the season although it didn't finish up the way we'd hope," Post 11 head coach Jason Sherrer said. "I think our team was much better than our 14-11 record, and I hope these players learned a lot about the game of baseball and individual player development.
"We have quite a few returning players that have another year to develop in their spring seasons. I want to thank (Post 11 athletic officer) Keith Hayes for all he does and my assistant coaches (Kodi Whitley, Coy Barnett) for the season we had."
