Survive and advance.
Such was the case on Friday for Charles B. Aycock's Carl Floars, who endured an uneven start at Goldsboro Municipal Golf Club to qualify on the number for the 13th annual Dogwood State Junior Championship.
The tournament, which now boasts a total of 147 players, will be contested at historic Bermuda Run Country Club (East) on August 1-3.
After beginning his round with a routine par at the first hole, Floars experienced difficulty with the driver, leading to a double-bogey at the par-4 second and back-to-back bogeys two holes later.
Suffice to say, not the desired start.
"Just a bad tee shot and a bad putt (on No. 2)," Floars said of the first hiccup.
The rising senior settled himself, however, parring 11 of his final 13 holes to card a six-over round of 77 -- only to then play the waiting game as the leaderboard fluctuated with the arrival of the event's final pairings.
Ultimately, Floars survived, finishing T-40 and making the full field as one of the event's final three qualifiers.
"I've played in a couple of other ones (Carolinas Golf Association events), but this is my first qualifier this year," Floars noted. "It's fun, definitely fun to go through."
And more so now, undoubtedly, with qualifying behind him.
